Laparoscopy Q & A
What is Laparoscopic Surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery is an advanced surgical procedure which is performed using trochars, or long, narrow instruments inserted through tubes. The procedure is performed by making tiny incisions and inserting the trochars and a camera which allows the surgeon to see what he or she is doing inside the patient. Commonly, incisions are made near the navel and because they are so small they allow the patient to heal faster and provide less scarring. Laparoscopy is traditionally performed under general anesthesia and carbon dioxide is used to inflate the patient’s abdomen, giving the doctor room to work.
What Conditions Are Treated with Laparoscopic Surgery?
Traditionally, laparoscopy is used to address fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and the removal of cancerous tissue found in the cervix, ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes. When treating small ovarian cysts, laparoscopy is used when they are believed to be benign. It can also be used to treat larger fibroids and allows the surgeon to either freeze or electrocute the fibroid in order to destroy it. The most common issue it is used to treat is endometriosis. During the laparoscopy, the surgeon will look for irregular lesions of endometrial tissue, endometriomas, and adhesions. The surgeon will also look for internal scarring. Typically, the procedure is an outpatient surgery however overnight stays can sometimes be required. This will depend on the complexity of the surgery and the duration. Some discomfort after the procedure is normal but is commonly managed using medications for pain. If the pain continues or is especially severe, it is important to contact the doctor.
Why Choose Laparoscopic Surgery?
Usually, laparoscopy is used to treat a variety of conditions because it requires minimal downtime and post-surgical pain is reduced. The recovery time is also reduced. Other common benefits include:
- Less Internal Scarring
- Patients can resume activities quicker
- Smaller Scars
- Shorter stays at the hospital
